Learning Target
I can choose an independent reading book that is interesting and enjoyable to read.
Opening Session
- Turn in your syllabus from yesterday!
- Tell me about the last good book you read 🙂
Work Session
We’re going to do a little book talk today! Actually, we’re going to do several. I’ve pulled a bunch of books off my classroom shelves and I’m going to tell you about them, what they’re about, and why you should read them.
After we discuss some of the books we have here in the room, I’m going to give everyone a strip of paper and bust out the colored pencils.
Today I want to give you guys some time to make a VERY important item you’ll need for the rest of this semester – a BOOKMARK! For this bookmark, we’re going to do a little activity called Illuminated Initials.
An Illuminated manuscript is one of those big fancy books with all the frilly illustrations around the edges of the page, and the BIG capital letter at the beginning of the chapter with all those decorations. Today, you’re going to write your own initials (now’s the time to get out those brush pens, handwriting geeks) on a paper bookmark and decorate and illustrate them in any way you feel like represents you. As you finish, I’d like you to write a short (1-paragraph) explanation on the back of your bookmark. At the end of class, I’ll take volunteers to share their bookmark, then I’ll collect them all to be laminated.
While you’re working on your bookmarks, I’ll call you in groups to come to the bookshelf and choose a novel for your first independent reading book.
Closing Session
Didn’t find anything you liked on the shelves? There’s another option I want to show you before you leave – an app called Libby!
You can download the Libby app to your phone or to a tablet and log in using your lunch number and your 4-digit birthday (without the year). For example, if your birthday is March 28th, your password would be 0328.
Libby gives you access to the Cobb County library system, so you can check out and read books right on your phone!
